Here is one I made earlier

There had not been much sewing going on at the moment, but rather than disappear for the next few weeks, I thought I would show some things I had made earlier.

This tote was inspired by the wonderful Yoshiko Jinzenji, who makes the most beautiful white on white baby quilts using nothing but FMQ parallel lines. If you follow this link you will see an example of what I mean.

This tote does not resemble the baby quilts, but it was the idea of creating patterns out of close parallel lines that I wanted to use. My original stitching was white on white fabric, but at the end of all the work, all you could see was white. The stitching didn't show up at all.

My solution was to dye to bag grey, accenting some of the patterns with a darker grey.
I used a cotton batting here, which has shrink a bit so some of the texture has got lost in the antiquing affect. I also think that perhaps I need to redye the grey darker.

The handles use one of the patterns.

This is quite a small tote - only A4. Although it wasn't too successful here, I still like the idea and to return to it is on my 'to do' list!

Thanks for visiting...

  1. Hilary, the tote is beautiful! The quilting shows up well in the pictures. I especially like the pattern you used in the handle.

  2. I love this, and funnily enough I thought it had a kind of Japanese feel going on when I first saw it. Definitely an idea worth exploring further.

  3. Lovely bag you made. I didn't know this lady and googled her in japanese. Her work is very minimalist and beautiful. So Japanese! Thank you for that.

  4. Yoshiko Jinzenji is one of the many talented artists featured in my new book:"Japanese Contemporary Quilts and Quilters: The Story of an American Import" due out this summer! It was such a thrill to include her. She has been working in this modern, minimalist aesthetic for nearly 3 decades. A truly gifted artist. I love that you have emulated her style with your bag! And I absolutely love the dark gray - definitely one of my favorite colors, especially for fashion, bags and home dec!

  5. Hilary, it's lovely - no other way of putting it. I might have to have a go at parallel lines of patterns like these, and A4 is such a good size for experimenting.

Thank you for linking up with Free Motion Mavericks.

    Love, Muv
