Blue Leaf

This book cover is made using left overs from a quilt I made many years ago.

I had ruched some thin fabric, dyed it using a palette of various blues, then cut out and appliqued leaves to a pale blue background.

This leaf is a little too far of to the left, but I didn't have enough fabric to rectify that.

To echo the ruching, I used a straight simple FMQ motif of parallel (ish) lines, but curved the columns to wrap around the leaf. I love the way this opens and closes the lines like a concertina.

Thanks for visiting...

  1. Oh, Hilary! I really like this one!! Well, I like them all but the colors and the quilting and the ruching! I wouldn't get any writing done, I'd be too busy petting the cover!! :) Beautifully done!

  2. The quilting on this is so pretty. It's such an effective design. I'll have to try to remember to add it to my repertoire.

  4. Ohhh! this is beauuutiful!. Is the applique of the leaf done by hand or is it machine appliqueed?
Again a source of inspiration. Thank you.

  7. This is just lovely. You would think with all the books I read I'd have tried making a book cover, but for some reason the idea intimidates me. What a great way to use up leftovers, and your stitching is wonderful!

  9. I like the leaf where it is. :-) And I love how intricate a "simple" motif can become.

  11. Hello Hilary,

I love the crinkly ruching and soft shades of blue. It is nice seeing how the shape of the leaf led to the overall flow of the FMQ.

I'm amazed you have so many beautiful book covers! Your bookshelves must look nothing like ours.

Thank you for linking up with Free Motion Mavericks!

    Love, Muv
