Going to Pieces again

I have finished Going to Pieces!

Art quilt, hand dyed with procion MX dyes, pieced, gold insets, free motion quilted, original design, Hilary Florence Quilting Workshop

...at least for the time being. I got a little bit carried away when I was doing the piecing and I still have a lot of strips left over. But that will be for another project.

I had a large piece of sage green dyed fabric which fitted the colour scheme quite well, so used that for the back. I did all the quilting in a sky blue thread in both top and bobbin and I quite like the effect of the seemingly randomly placed patterns.

As the sage fabric wasn't quite large enough I added a couple of strips of darker green. I thought I would spice it up with bits left over from the quilt top. This turned out not to be such a good idea. The FMQ patterns do not marry up and quilting over two sets of seams was VERY bumpy!

I wanted both variety and repetition to hold it together. I think there are about 20 different patterns in total, but many many more strips. There is a lot more repetition than noticeable on the photos.

I quilted each strip with one of the patterns. Where a strip was constructed out of pieces I used one motif adjusted to fit each piece.

And a few more close ups.

  1. Hilary, I love this. As I've said before your quilting style is so individual and I love how you have used loads of different motifs here - it's a great idea and it has worked out beautifully.

  2. Love the way you have quilted this piece. I also love the way you pieced it and the gold sparks here & there. You are an inspiration to me!
Have you ever thought of publishing a book on how you quilt all these cool motifs? I love them and I am sure other Quilters would too.

  3. You must be a speed demon! I can't believe that you have quilted this huge quilt already. I absolutely love the way you quilted it and I like what you have chosen for the back. Bravo on another job well done.

  4. Hello Hilary,

Such beautiful blues! I'm always a bit nervous of using blue because it can all too easily look cold in chilly old Blighty, but with the mauves and the gold you have pulled the whole colour scheme well clear of the fridge. And of course the quilting is gorgeous.

Thank you for linking up to Free Motion Mavericks!

    Love, Muv

  5. Such soothing colours! I love this, and love the way you've incorporated the FMQ designs into the strips. I have, er, a few (nose is growing) strips hanging about and your quilt inspires me to use them up (okay if I used them all up my quilt would be the size of Canada) ahem, use SOME of them to make a quilt like yours! Love the sparkles of gold here and there, totally makes me smile!
